Sovereignty is a call for artistic and creative engagement at the multiple intersections of sovereignty as it pertains to the individual, jurisdictions, systems, and society as a whole. The program supports dynamic creative practices that engage complex social issues, inspire individual transformation, and inform collective action.

local, national, and international applicants of all backgrounds are welcome. SFAI is especially committed to supporting marginalized and underrepresented artists, including Black, Indigenous, and artists of color, disabled, LGBTQ+, women, and immigrant artists.

Individuals and Collaborations residencies from a minimum of 1 month to a maximum of 3 months are possible. The applicants with interdisciplinary and non-traditional creative practices are strongly encouraged. Applicants must be 25 years or older.

The months available for Individuals and Collaborations are January, February, March, May, June, September, October, and November. Residency months do not have to be consecutive (e.g., applicants may elect to come for a month in the spring and then return for another month in the fall). The Family Residency is for just one month, in July only.

Any particular level of education or training to apply are not required. The residency program is open to emerging, mid-career, and established artists and creative practitioners who have a dedicated studio practice and professional demeanor.

The Creative Access Fellowship includes a $1,000 stipend to each selected artist as well as an extra room for a personal care assistant (PCA) and a $1,000 travel stipend for the PCA, if needed.
