OPEN CALL FÜR TÄNZER*INNEN, MUSIKER*INNEN & DJS

Da die Theaterwelt, vor allem in Österreich, ihren Fokus auf klassischem und zeitgenössischem Tanz sowie Musik hat, sehen die künstlerischen Leiterinnen Farah Deen und Olivia Mitterhuemer es in ihrer Verantwortung, professionelle Künstler*innen der Street- und Clubstyle Kulturen zu unterstützen, ihnen eine Plattform zu bieten und im Theater sichtbar zu machen. Darum wird bereits zum zweiten Mal ein Tanztheaterabend kuratiert: das “Flavourama Performatory”.
- - - Wir suchen nach Street- und Clubstyle Tänzer*innen (Hip Hop, House Dance, Popping, Locking, Waacking, Voguing, Breaking und verwandte Stile), im Solo, als Duo oder Trio. Ebenso nach Musiker*innen, DJs oder Bands derselben Genres, erneut im Solo, als Duo oder Trio. Der Call richtet sich an Künstler*innen, die Interesse an der Mitgestaltung von Veränderung haben und offen für die Erschließung von neuen kreativen Räumen sind. - - -
Um auf aktuelle Diskurse und die spürbar wachsende Nachfrage von diversen Festivals und Choreograf*innen, Stile wie Hip Hop, House Dance oder Breaking auch im Bühnenkontext zu zeigen, einzugehen, werden verschiedene Künstler*innen ausgewählt, um gemeinsam neue kreative Räume zu eröffnen und schließlich drei improvisierte Kurzstücke zu kreieren.
Um die Codes der jeweiligen Tanz- und Musikstile, die in den frühen 80ern großteils durch marginalisierte Gruppen in den USA geprägt wurden, in einem neuen Kontext auszutesten, erhalten die ausgewählten Künstler*innen vor der Performance einen Workshop in interdisziplinärer Improvisation und Instant Composition von Nayana Keshava Bhat. Ihre langjährige Erfahrung in Echtzeit-Komposition soll so mit den Konventionen von Street- und Club-Tänzen bzw. der zugehörigen Musik verschmelzen, um den Gruppen nach einem kurzen Kennenlernen einen performativen Spielplatz zu bieten, an dem keine Grenzen gesetzt sind.
Ablauf:
Der Tag (7.9.2023) startet für alle Künstler*innen daher um 10:00 Uhr mit einem Workshop von Nayana Keshava Bhat, einer erfahrenen zeitgenössischen Tänzerin und Performerin aus Indien mit künstlerischem Schwerpunkt auf interdisziplinärer Improvisation. Innerhalb dieses Workshops teilt sie ihr tiefgreifendes praktisches Wissen über Echtzeit-Komposition mit den Teilnehmenden, die sich aus einer neuen Perspektive für die eigene Freestyle Praxis inspirieren lassen können.
Um das Gelernte dann wieder mit der eigenen Kultur zu verknüpfen, wird es danach ein Gespräch über die Codes der Hip Hop und House Dance Kulturen geben, in dem die Frage gestellt wird, wie man jene Codes im Theaterkontext einbringen und sichtbar machen kann und will.
Nach einer Mittagspause bekommen die drei spontan zusammengewürfelten Gruppen bestehend aus Musiker*innen/DJs und Tänzer*innen Zeit, gemeinsam im Studio zu experimentieren und einen Score für ihre spätere Impro-Performance zu erarbeiten.
Zeitplan:
• 10.00-11.30 Uhr Instant Composition Workshop mit Nayana Keshava Bhat
• 11.30-12 Uhr: Diskussion & kritische Auseinandersetzung über die Codes von Street- & Club Dances und deren Sichtbarmachung im Theater
• 12-14 Uhr Pause
• 14-17 Uhr freie Sessions in den Gruppen
• 19 Uhr Performatory Performance
Niki Awandee wird das Publikum durch den Abend begleiten. Ein zusätzliches Highlight des Abends ist die Solo-Performance „Black“ des Künstlers Oulouy (Aerowaves Artist 2022) aus Barcelona. Das Stück ist eine Reflexion über Gewalt und Emanzipation von Schwarzsein in der heutigen Welt durch einen Körper, der sowohl verwundet als auch gefeiert wird.
Bewerbungsfrist ist der 19.5.2023; alle Acts werden von den künstlerischen Leiter*innen Flavouramas - Olivia Mitterhuemer und Farah Deen - ausgewählt.
Ein basic technical set-up (incl. Turntables/CDjs) wird zur Verfügung gestellt; die Performance findet am 7. September 2023 um 19:00 Uhr in der ARGEkultur in Salzburg statt.
Grundkenntnisse in Englisch sind erforderlich.
Leider können keine Reise- oder Unterbringungskosten übernommen werden.
Alle ausgewählten Künstler*innen erhalten ein Freiticket für das Festivalwochenende (7.-9.9.2023).

OPEN CALL FOR DANCERS, MUSICIANS & DJS
As the theatre world, especially in Austria, has its focus on classical and contemporary dance as well as music, the artistic directors Farah Deen and Olivia Mitterhuemer see it as their responsibility to support professional artists of street and club style cultures, to offer them a platform and to make them visible in the theatre. That is why they are curating a dance theatre evening for the second time: the "Flavourama Performatory".
- - - We are looking for street and club dancers (hip hop, house, popping, locking, waacking, voguing, breaking and related styles), musicians and DJs (of the same genres) in solo, duo, or trio constellations. The call is for artists who are interested in the exploration of their performative skills and in opening new creative spaces. - - -
To respond to current discourses and the noticeably growing demand of various festivals and choreographers to show styles like Hip Hop, House Dance or Breaking also in a stage context, different artists will be selected to open new creative spaces together and finally create three improvised short pieces.
To test the codes of the respective dance and music styles, which were largely shaped by marginalized groups in the USA in the early 80s, in a new context, the selected artists will receive a workshop in interdisciplinary improvisation and instant composition by Nayana Keshava Bhat before the performance. Her many years of experience in real-time composition will thus merge with the conventions of street and club dance, or the music that goes with it, to provide the groups with a performative playground where no boundaries are set.
Schedule:
The day (Sept. 7th) will therefore start for all artists at 10:00 am with a workshop by Nayana Keshava Bhat, an experienced contemporary dancer and performer from India with an artistic focus on interdisciplinary improvisation. Within this workshop, she will share her in-depth practical knowledge of real-time composition with the participants, who can gain inspiration for their own freestyle practice from a new perspective.
Then, to connect what they've learned back to their own culture, there will be a conversation afterwards about the codes of hip hop and house dance cultures, asking how they can and will bring those codes into the theatre context and make them visible.
After a lunch break, the three spontaneously thrown together groups consisting of musicians/DJs and dancers will be given time to experiment together in the studio and develop a score for their later improvised performance.
Timetable:

- 11.30 a.m. -12.30 p.m.: Discussion & critical engagement on the codes of street & club dances and how to make them visible in theatre
- 12-2 p.m.: Break
- 2-5 p.m.: free sessions in groups
- 7 p.m. Performatory Performance
Niki Awandee will guide the audience through the evening. An additional highlight of the evening is the solo performance "Black" by artist Oulouy (Aerowaves Artist 2022) from Barcelona. The piece is a reflection on violence and emancipation of blackness in today's world through a body that is both wounded and celebrated.
The application deadline is 5/19/2023; all acts will be selected by Flavourama's artistic directors Olivia Mitterhuemer and Farah Deen.
A basic technical set-up (incl. turntables/CDjs) will be provided; the performance will take place on September 7, 2023 at 7:00 pm at ARGEkultur in Salzburg.
Basic knowledge of English is required.
Unfortunately, no travel or accommodation costs can be covered.
