The third edition of CURRENT – Art and Urban Space will take place from 26 June to 27 July 2025, inviting artists and artist groups to propose new works for the urban space that explore the theme of ‘Air’ in all its social, political, ecological, and material dimensions.

CURRENT – Art in Public Space is a transdisciplinary festival held in Stuttgart every two years. By developing exemplary formats, CURRENT experimentally explores artistic forms, strategies and practices contextualised in the city.

CURRENT follows the streams and traces of air through the city. Air currents determine the course of the festival, serving as both guiding principle and narrative, aesthetic and artistic element for the interplay of movement and stagnation. Two artistic positions are invited via an open call to examine the significance of air in its urban, historical and social dimensions. To be submitted are new works that use and investigate air as a material form and explore its unique features.

The following formats and media are available to artists: one media board at Stuttgart’s Pragsattel intersection and a total of eight flags mounted on flagpoles in Stuttgart’s city center and in Degerloch. In addition, the artworks can be accompanied by other artistic formats such as performances, walks, readings or talks.

Production costs of 4,000 EUR gross are provided for each submission. This excludes fixed costs, which will be covered directly by the organiser. With the completion of the artwork, the artists or artist groups will receive a fee of 4,000 EUR gross.
